UCP is blessed with many wonderful volunteers.
Each week you will be greeted in the church office by generous people who answer the phone, check e-mails, preparethe bulletin, and make hundreds of copies. On the last Thursday of each month, you will find a busy group preparing Parish Life for mailing to the congregation. Each Wednesday, vocal musicians prepare their gifts for worship services as the dancers and hand-bell choirs do on Sunday.
Every Sunday, ushers, greeters, communion stewards, sound technicians, acolytes, liturgists, musicians, accompanists, drivers, and coffee-hour volunteers bring their unique talents together so that worship services may truly be a time of praise and adoration of God.Also on any given Sunday, you will find more than 35 Christian Education volunteers giving faithfully of
their time. These generous folks teach Sunday School classes, lead Godly Play or WOW, and act as superintendents, teaching assistants, or childcare volunteers. They also prepare dinner for the Youth Group and assist with programming as well as mentoring confirmands.
On Wednesdays, the children's worship bags are refurbished for use on Sunday mornings; on Tuesdays, Confirmation class meets; and on Thursdays, two Disciple Bible Study classes take place. There also are the special events like the Healthy Self-Esteem Seminars, Issues Class community forums, and the Lenten Series, which could not take place without Christian Education volunteers.
And we can't forget the Men's Breakfasts, W.I.T.S. book discussions and retreats, spirituality development groups, mission projects, blood drives, all church events, special congregational opportunities, and the gardeners, woodworkers, and repair specialists.
There are hidden volunteers who count the offering each week, prepare nametags, keep our website up to date, and send news releases to various papers. We'll never know the hours of prayers, phone calls, or visits shared among parishioners. And, of course, we couldn't count all the time spent in meetings and planning for the present and the future of UCP.
I thank God for all of you who give unselfishly of your gifts! How many people does it take to make UCP function smoothly? It takes all of us doing our part as servants of Christ in the world of Reston and around the globe. Are you willing to add your talents to those of the UCP volunteers? Speak with the chairs of any of the ministries and ask where you can be of help, or call the church office and tell the volunteer who answers what you'd like to do. You will be blessed in what you do, even as you are a blessing to others.
